The artist notes that the Shoebill is endemic to Africa and is threatened by habitat loss. "Individuals are also captured and sold to zoos or killed for food. Consequently, this species is at risk. As an artist, I particularly like the Shoebill for its expression, and as a conservationist I am concerned about its survival. For this drawing, I wanted to show the the bird as a scientific plate. It is based on many observations."

Although this species is widespread--it can be found in large swamps from Sudan to Zambia--the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable because its small, declining population is also at risk from nesting disturbance, especially by large, swamp-feeding herbivores, and habitat degradation especially from cattle, fire, development, and conflicts that disrupt protection. Censusing and efforts to curb these threats, which include identifying and monitoring key sites, building Shoebill "pride" in nearby communities, and discouraging hunting are underway. Tanzania's Moyowosi/Kigosi/ Ugalla complex, the country's first Ramsar Site, seasonally hosts 2,000 individuals.
