The artist notes: "The Black grouse is about to vanish from the Netherlands. Agricultural reforms, over-fertilization, decreasing water levels, diminishing habitat, and disturbance due to recreation are the main problems facing this fantastic species. Luckily, several decades ago, I occasionally witnessed their spectacular displays. In this painting, I tried to revitalize the memory of a quiet and misty early morning."
