The artist noted: " Due to the use of pesticides in the 1960's, the number of European Kestrels decreased dramatically. The species has never fully recovered, mainly because of the industrialization of agriculture. Putting up nestboxes is effective; nesting success is higher among birds using boxes than among those using natural nests. Nearly 60 percent of breeding pairs in one Dutch province (Drenthe) use nesting boxes.

The painting was used as cover for a Dutch raptor magazine."
